Our plan for the stadiums that will host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is to leave a lasting legacy for surrounding neighbourhoods and for the communities around the world that will receive modular elements of the venues. We are just as committed to ensuring a legacy for the people building those stadiums.

'Workers' welfare is of critical importance to the work of the SC. It has the potential to create a transformative and truly global social legacy for the first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East.'

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy

The media spotlight has never been far away since Qatar won the right to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to the Middle East for the first time. It has illuminated challenges faced by the country. With strong government support, we have tackled these challenges head on.

Unique opportunities

The work of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and the scrutiny attached to our projects has accelerated the introduction of labour reforms in Qatar. We are proud to have played a significant part in that process.

We have introduced better working standards on our projects, overseen contractors building better accommodation, and delivered training courses to improve workers' professional and personal skills.

The work we have done with Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar to carry out a groundbreaking health and nutrition study – the first of its kind in the Gulf region – will leave a blueprint for organisations throughout Qatar and the region to follow.

Building futures for workers

We believe continuous development and educational support helps the workers delivering SC projects create better futures for themselves and their families. We understand the part our workers play in building Qatar's future. We commit to not only respecting this, but to also providing a level of training and education that will enhance their future opportunities when they leave our projects.

The first report by FIFA's Human Rights Advisory Board has recognised our efforts, recommending that various SC initiatives should be incorporated into the planning and delivery of future FIFA tournaments – evidence that Qatar's vision of a true social legacy is becoming a reality.

The unseen legacy of this tournament will be perhaps the most important. It will be the homes that are built, the children who are educated and the families who are provided for by our workers.

That legacy will continue long after 2022.
